Major Sins

"If you avoid the Major Sins Kaba'er that you have been forbidden of, We (God) will acquit you of your bad deeds and admit you into a place of honour (Paradise)" (4:31)
The following are some Major Sins Kaba'er compiled from a book by the same title written in Arabic by the Islamic scholar Imam Al-Zahabe (born 673/1274, died 748/1348).
These Major Sins Kaba'er are stated briefly, each as one item on a DON'T list for easy recall by the reader. Some items are supported by reference to one or more verse "Aaiah" from the Quran and/or a Hadith (Prophet's teaching).
Follow-up reading and study of each Major Sin is highly recommended. May God Almighty guide us all to the right path. Amen.



Don't:

1- Associate any partner with God. (4:48 & 116/ 31:13/ 5:72/ 18:110)
2- Kill a human being intentionally - except in battle, or if he/she kills someone or for self-defence. (4:93/ 25:68-70/ 5:32/ 81:8 & 9)
3- Believe in magic, witchcraft and the like. (2:102)
4- Neglect to perform your regular prayers Salah (19:59 & 60/107:4 &5/ 63:9/ 74:42-48)
5- Neglect to pay your regular charity Zakah (3:160/ 41:6 & 7/ 9:34 & 35/ 63:10)
6- Break your fast during the month of Ramadan without a valid reason. (2:183 & 184)
7- Neglect to perform pilgrimage Hajj if you can afford it financially and you are in good health (3:97)
8- Be rude to your parents. (17:23 & 31: 14)
9- Sever ties with relatives (4:1/ 47:22 & 23/ 13:20 &21/ 2:26 & 27)
10- Engage in sexual relationships outside of marriage:fornication or adultery (17:32/ 25:66-70/ 24:2)
11- Commit homosexual acts (11:82 & 83/ 26:165-166/ 21:74)
12- Take or give interest on money Riba (3:130/ 2:275)
13- Take the money of orphans or the oppressed, when you are entrusted with it. (4:10/ 6:152/ 4:6)
14- Fabricate lies regarding God or His Prophet

and in Bukhari & Muslim:"Whoever makes up a lie on me (Mohamed) will end up in Hellfire".

15- Run away from the battlefield which is established for the sake of Islam. (8:16)
16- Inflict injustice on people under your care. (42:42/ 14:42 & 43/ 26:227/ 5:79)
17- Be arrogant and conceited. (40:27/ 16:23/ 2:34/ 31:18)
18- Be a false witness (25: 72/ 22:30/ 40:28)
19- Consume intoxicating beverages - beer, wine, etc., and /or take intonxicating drugs - hash, etc. (5:90-91)
20- Gamble - bet money, buy lottery tickets, etc. ( 5:90-91/ 5:3)
21- Spread a lie about a Muslim woman regarding her character. (24:23-24/ 24:4)
22- Take unlawfully from the possessions of the enemy when you are victorious. (8:58/ 3:161)
23- Steal (5:38)
24- Terrorize and / or rob travellers (5:33)
25- Swear - to confirm a lie. (3:77)
26- Support injustice (14:42-45/ 42:42/ 26:227/ 11:102
27- Be an unjust ruler or official. (42:42)
28- Eat the unlawful and keep what does not belong to you. (2:188)
29- Commit suicide. (4:29-30)
30- Lie. (3:61/ 51:10/ 40:28/ 58:14)
31- Pass judgements on any deeds - without the guidance of the Quran and Sunna. (5:44/ 5:45/ 5:47)
32- Take bribes. (2:188)
33- Imitate your opposite sex.

in Bukhari:

"God condemns the women who imitate men and the men who imitate women".

34- Pretend not to know when your wife commits adultery. (24:3)
35- Be a husband for the purpose of allowing a divorced woman to remarry her ex-husband after he has divorced her three times.

In Nasai:

"Condemn the Mohalil : husband, and the Mohalal Loh:ex-husband".

36- Neglect to hygienically clean yourself thoroughly after you go to the washroom. (74:4)
37- Try to impress people. (4:142/ 107:4-7/ 2:264)
38- Keep religious knowledge to yourself. (35:28/ 2:159/ 3:187)
39- Break pledges (8:27/ 12:52)
40- Remind people of good deeds you have done for them. (2:264)
41- Disbelieve in destiny Qadar (54:47-49)
42- Spy on people. (49:12)
43- Gossip. (68:10-11)
44- Condemn a Muslim, in Bukhari : "Condemning a Muslim is like killing him / her".
45- Break promises, treaties or agreements. (17:34/ 5:1)
46- Believe in astrology. (17:36)
47- Challenge the authority of your husband - for married women - unless it is against the Quran and Sunna. (4:34)
48- Make statues - for worship. (33:57)
49- Act in despair when a disaster strikes - such as losing a loved one in Bukhari:

"They don't belong to us, those who slap their faces and tear their clothes - to express grief - and act as the pagans do".

50- Inflict injustice upon people. (42:42)
51- Be rude / offensive to the deprived, poor, homeless, etc. (4:36)
52- Be rude to your neighbours. in Ahmed:

"I swear by God that you are not a believer till your neighbour is secure from your mischief".

53- Be rude to your Muslim brothers and sisters. (33:58)
54- Inflict harm on your Muslim brothers and sisters. (33:58)
55- Dress lavishly. (31:16)
56- Wear silk or gold - for men

in Abu Dawood:

"It is unlawful for the men of my nation to wear silk and gold".

57- Desert your master -for slaves, without arranging for your freedom in Targeeb:

"If a slave runs away from his master, his prayer is not accepted".

59- Knowingly claim to be the son/daughter of someone other than your father/mother

in Bukhari:

"Who claims to be the son or daughter of other than his father knowingly, will not enter paradise".

60- Argue in vain. (29:46/ 40:4)
61- Deprive people of drinking your water. (67:30)
62- Cheat people in a weight or a volume of goods for which they have paid. (83:1-6)
63- Take for granted what God gives you - health, wealth, family, job, education, .. etc. (6:44)
64- Be rude to the worshippers

(Imam Al-Zahabe).

65- Neglect praying in a congregation without a valid reason

in Muslim:

"People should not neglect congregational prayers, because if they do, God will seal their heart and they will be among the forgetful".

66- Avoid to pray in a congregation intentionally. (68:42-43)
67- Be unjust in allocating the part of your will which can be distributed outside of your rightful heirs. (4:12)
68- Be cunning / deceitful. (35:43)
69- Spy on Muslims and reveal their weaknesses.

70- Say unkind words about the Prophet's companions, in Bukhari:

""Don't say unkind words about my companions".
